Description

Macedon, Kingdom of Philip II, (359-336 B.C.), gold stater, (8.562 grams), Abydos mint, issued c.323-319 B.C., obv. head of Apollo to right with laureate wreath, rev. galloping biga driven by charioteer holding kentron in right hand, reins in left hand, **DU* and horse's leg below, in exergue **FILIPPOV*, (cf.S.6663, SNG ANS 294 var. [horse's leg in exergue], Thompson ADM II 71 var [horse's leg in exergue]). An unpublished variety as struck, good extremely fine and extremely rare.

According to Thompson, Alexander Drachm Mint II, coins of this series (**DU*) with the horse's leg all position the leg in the exergue. Coins of the series subsequent to this (**X*) when containing a horse's leg, all place the leg below the horses. Thus, it is possible that the present specimen may bridge the two series.
