Marcus Aurelius, (A.D. 161-180), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 165-6, (34.72 grams), obv. laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right, around M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG ARMENIACVS, rev. around TR POT XX IMP III COS II, SC missing from field, Providentia standing to left holding wand and sceptre, at her feet a globe, (cf.S.1449, cf.RIC 906, C.803). On a full medallic size flan, with an even dark brown attractive patina with some smoothing in the fields, well centred and nearly very fine being, extremely rare on a medallic flan.

Ex Earl Fitzwilliam's Wentworth Sale, Christie's, May 30, 1949 (lot 433 or 434 as part) bought by A.H. Baldwin purchased from them 11th November 1964 (œ15.0.0) by Cornelius C. Vermeule III Collection, sold in Triton III (lot 1712 part) for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, with his ticket.
