Thomas Scott Berwick. Enl.15Jun1915. M.M. C.G.25Jul1918. 'On the 13th December 1917 the Z.5.A. Medium Trench Mortar Battery was in action in the Oostlaverne Sector, east of Wytschaete, with a 9.45 inch Heavy Trench Mortar. This mortar which was firing from an exposed position drew heavy retaliatory fire from hostile 10.5cm guns. The telephone cable was cut in several places close to the battery. Number 1085 Gunner T.S.Berwick fully realising that he would be under direct enemy observation throughout, immediately volunteered to repair the cable. He carried out this task under continuous and heavy shell fire utterly disregarding his personal safety. Through his efforts, fire control was maintained and a destructive shoot completed. His splendid example and coolness under fire are seserving of special recognition'. Together with some research, identity disc T.S.Berwick / No.1085 / 9th L.H.3rd Bdge / A.I.F., ribbon bar, discharge certificate.
