Description
The Sydney Deposit Bank, Sydney, ten pounds, dated 17 Dec (uncertain reading) 1892?, (18 printed), numbered G 0281, uncertain reading of signatures, on paper, unwatermarked (?), imprint of 'Sands McDougall Limited' (Vort-Ronald, comments on bank and type p.218-219, Tomlinson type illustrated [proof] [p.94-5]). Many folds and creases, rough edges with corner missing, with rust marks from pins, various pinholes and crease holes, otherwise good-very good and extremely rare for this denomination.
A small bank that was active from 1885-1892. It's note issue was also very small and is believed to be initiated as a means of obtaining additional capital. This note was probably circulated to pass as an issued note for this denomination by having false signatures and date added. The issue began on July 1, 1890 and lasted probably until a time near its collapse. Proof notes are much more common than circulating notes. Vort-Ronald notes numbers of G0205-G0457 for unissued notes.
