Description

English, Scottish & Australian Chartered Bank, Melbourne, one pound, issued at Melbourne but overstamped CANCELLED in rectangular block eight times, Dec 1, 1858, (185 printed), not numbered, hand signed by Manager J. Dowlice (?), and entered by R. Tromp (?) (the Accountant) (Vort-Ronald, p.156-161 on bank, five pound note of similar type illustrated Fig.167, Tomlinson p.64 illustrates one pound note of type). A few folds and creases, with minor tone spot on one corner, little aging tone, otherwise very fine, very rare and probably unique as a cancelled note of this bank.

Ex. Spink Noble Sale 43, (lot 3427). $$ This issue of the English, Scottish & Australian Chartered Bank (1852-1970), was cancelled probably because it lacked a number and therefore consequently kept apart from other issues. It also had very little circulation if any. This first type issue is much rarer, (and also rare as an early dated note), than the later 19th century issues.
