Description
Cornwall Bank, Launceston (Cornwall County), Van Diemen's Land, one pound, dated Feb, 1, 1831, (183 printed), numbered 7338, signatures on note are Richard Dry (foundation director of the bank 1828-1836) and William Effington Lawrence (Bank Chairman 1828-1836) imprint of 'Bock sct Hobart' (Vort-Ronald, comments on bank and type p.153). Many folds and creases, rough edges stiftened with fresh paper on frayed edges, with additional tone and staining marks, many pin-holes, otherwise good - very good and excessively rare if not unique as an issued note from this bank.
A small bank that was active from 1828-1835. Opened when the Derwent Bank refused to open a branch in Launceston. The bank was absorbed by the Bank of Australasia. Notes were issued in denominations from one to twenty pounds. Proof and unissued notes are known, this example is the only known issued and circulating note. The lot comes with a newspaper clipping from January 1997 Bank Note Reporter.
