Bank of New South Wales, five pounds, issued at Sydney, April 1, 1881, (18 printed), No.A/A 194124, hand signed by Manager W.B. Hawthorne and entered by J.H. Potts, with imprint in centre of bottom, 'Charles Skipper & East, London' (New England Hoard No. 79 [Report of ANS 1974 yearbook, pp.49-68], Vort-Ronald, p.67-85 on bank, and similar note illustrated as Fig.78, Tomlinson p.24 illustrates five pound note of type). Folds and creases, minor pencil markings on back, otherwise very fine and rare.
Ex New England Hoard (No.79). The Bank of New South Wales five pound notes of this type all come from the New England Hoard of 1971, [Pitchfork & Freehill, 'A Significant Hoard of Nineteenth Century Australian Commercial Banknotes' [ANS 1974 Yearbook], where some 60 five pound notes were found out of a total hoard of 123 banknotes of mostly five pound denomination.
