Acting Squadron Leader William Frederick Anning RAFVR, joined 72 (F) Sqn as a Pilot Officer when it went to North Africa as part of Operation Torch, where he operated from airfields in Tunisia, then to Italy with the same squadron as Act/Flying Officer, but was 'grounded' for medical reasons - ear problems with oxygen at high altitudes. He returned to the U.K. and was appointed as Flying Officer with 56 Sqn on ground duties, and went with this squadron tO Germany in 1945. After the cessation of hostilities, Anning returned to the R.Aux.A.F. with the rank of Act/Sqn Leader, with which he served until 1950, qualifying for the Air Efficiency Award.
