Sextus Pompey, younger son of Pompey the Great, (died 35 B.C.), silver denarius, mint of Spain, issued 45-44 B.C., (3.434 grams), obv. bare head of Pompey the Great to right, around [SEX] MAG PIVS [IMP] around, rev. Pietas standing to left holding palm branch and transverse sceptre, to left PIETAS, (cf.S.1388 [£1200 VF], Cr.477/3b, Syd. 1041 corrected, C. Pompey 12 [£700]). Lightly toned, nearly fine and very rare.
Issued by Sextus Pompey in Spain. The reverse type of Pietas is illustrative of his determination to avenge the deaths of his father and brother. This issue is important in portraying a portrait of Pompey.
