Description

Palestine, Judaea, Mattathias Antigonus, (40 - 37 B.C.), copper prutah, obv. Hebrew inscription surrounded by wreath, rev. double cornucopiae, (Hendin 36 [$100 US], S. 6105). Has been cleaned, with slightly off centre flans as usual, otherwise fine - very fine and scarce.

Ex David Hendin. Of Biblical importance as this coin type is also often described as the widow's mite. Coins of this Jewish ruler are usually poorly preserved and rarely have a legible legend. This specimen is better than most and has a fairly good legend.
