Description
Palestine, Judaea, John Hyrcanus II, (67, 63 - 40 B.C.), copper prutah, obv. Hebrew inscription surrounded by wreath, rev. double cornucopiae, (Hendin 21 var. S. 6095), Has been carefully cleaned, with very sharp Hebrew script, off centre flans as usual, otherwise very fine.
Ex David Hendin. This type has from recent hoard finds been reattributed to John Hyrcanus I (134-104 B.C.), and therefore becomes the earliest issue of a Jewish ruler. This issue is of Biblical importance as this coin type is also often described as the widow's mite.
