Seargeant James Newton Clifton At Strazeek on the night of the 11th June at 9.35pm the 112th Howitzer Battery position was very heavily shelled. The ammunition was set on fire and Sgt J.N. Clifton rushed up and extinguished a burning dump at great personal risk; and a few minutes later, when a gas shell dump had been hit and several gas shells, and throwing several broken gas shells into a hole nearby. By his courageous actions he saved a third and much larger dump in the Battery position and undoubtedly prevented gas casualties in his own and neighbouring units. Sgt Clifton is one of the finest types of NCO and has been an example of gallant soldierly bearing in the battery since its formation. Recommended for DCM. By Lt Col H.N.
