Description
Universal Exposition Paris 1878, in .900 fine gold (50mm) (84.8 grams) by Chaplain at Paris Mint awarded to Dalton Freres (in tablet on reverse). Good very fine and very rare to an Australian.
Dalton Brothers was established in Orange NSW in 1858 by James Dalton and his brother Thomas as a pastoral enterprise. The Dalton family was one of the colony's richest and most influential Catholic families. James (1834-1919) was born in Limerick and migrated from Ireland because of the famine of the 1840's. He died leaving an estate worth œ73,000 (ADB Vol.4 pp.10-11).
