Description

Severus Alexander, (A.D. 222-235), sestertius, Rome mint, issued 222-229, obv. laureate bust to r., rev. VIRTVS AVG, Virtus standing to r., leaning on shield and holding inverted spear, (cf.RIC 623, cf.S.2271). Somewhat polished, good fine/fine and unpublished.

The published reverse for this issue is VIRTVS AVGVSTI, but clearly this coin has the shortened legend which has previously only been noted on silver and gold issues.
