Description
Shah Jahan I, (A.H. 1037-1068, A.D.1628-1658), round Gold mohur, (10.95 grams), struck in Surat mint, issued A.H. [1038] (A.D. 1628-9), Regnal Year 2, Azar month, Surat mint signature, obv. around dots within circles, Kalima, Regnal Year, month and mint signature, rev. Persian legend, (Mitchiner 3211, KM. SAC 255.6). Full bold strike as struck, nearly uncirculated.
Ex. Akola hoard (Num. Digest I, (II), p.36-8). Some 3,000 coins of this exact mint, date and month, were found along the river bank near the city of Akola. About 1,000 coins reached the market, the remainder were seized by the government. All pieces are uncirculated and as struck. The hoard is believed to have been the military pay sent from the mint at Surat to the troops fighting near Golconda. It is probable that the entire mintage was in the hoard.
