Claudius, (A.D. 41-54), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 40-41, (23.91 grams), obv. laureate head of Claudius to right, around TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP, countermarked in oblong PROB, rev. EX S C/OB/CIVES/SERVATOS in four lines, oak-wreath around, (S.1849, RIC 96, C.39, BMC 115). Heavy surface marks on reverse, countermark very fine, host coin nearly fine and rare with this countermark.

The lot includes old ticket and card of Rome dealer from whom the coin was acquired. The countermark is one of a group struck on issues of Claudius and earlier issues during the reign of Nero validating the coinage.
