Description

Italy, Lucania, Sybaris, (c.530-510 B.C.), silver stater, (7.89 grams), obv. bull standing to left, looking back, YM above, rev. bull standing to right, looking back, but incuse, and no legend, (cf.S.245 [£700], SNG Cop. 1390, SNG ANS 819 [same dies]). Short on flan as usual but about full weight, otherwise very fine/nearly extremely fine and rare.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 52 (lot 1862). Sybaris, was founded by the Achaeans c.720 B.C., it was the richest and most important of the Greek colonies in Italy until its destruction by Croton in 510 B.C. The city of Thurium was (initially called New Sybaris) was founded over the ruins of Sybaris in 443 B.C.
