Lot 1659
Sale 46 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes
Description
Heaton Mint, proof or specimen florin, Birmingham 1914H. Well struck with full original sealed or patinated proof-like surfaces, attractively toned to a gun metal grey with some iridescence and olive toning on the reverse, FDC and extremely rare, only three known, struck as a proof, this is equal to the finest known.
Ex Birmingham Mint Museum and Spink Australia Sale 15 (lot 721) and Sale 23 (lot 1505). Curiouslu a raised hairlike occurs behind the king's head in the obverse field, the result of harsh polising of the die while the fields overall exhibit the characteristic 'orange peel' effect.
