First medal engraved on reverse 'Pozieres Lieut N.G.Mathews 17th Batt A.I.F. 25.7.16, second engraved around edge 'Presented to Inspector Mathews by H.M. The King August 14th 1912'. Son-in-Law. India General Service Medal 1908 - one bar - Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919. 2 Lieut C.S.Murray Corps of Guides. Impressed. Very fine.

MC:C.G.14Dec1916. 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He showed great courage when driving the enemy out of our trenches. His fine example gave great encouragement to the men. Though once wounded and twice buried by shells, he insisted on remaining at his post.' Together with a boxing medal in bronze (44mm) to the son-in-law inscribed 'Novices / Boxing Competition / (Class A) / Light Heavy Weights / Winner / C.S.Murray / Aug 10th 1918', extract from 'History of 17Bn A.I.F.', newspaper clipping and case of issue for MC.
