Victorian Volunteer Long and Efficient Service Medal (type 1). J.Kelly Capt 2nd Batn. V.R. Impressed. Together with a gift box lid plaque in silver (58 x 37mm) engraved 'Presented / to / Captain James Kelly / By the members of the / Prahran City Fire Brigade / on his / Wedding Day / April 14th 1888'. Very fine.
Captain James Joseph Kelly. Born Prahran 1851. Appointed Lieutenant Victorian Volunteer Forces 22May1879 and to Southern Volunteer Rifle Company, to D Company, 2nd Battalion, Victorian Rifles, V.M.F. (part time) 1Jan1884, Captain 1May1886, to A Company 30Jun1886, qualified in Musketry and Gunnery Training 30Jun1887, to Reserve of Officers 1889, he was a teacher at Punt Road State School, Captain Prahran City Fire Brigade and an active instigator of the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigades Board. Died 5Feb1891 and is buried in St Kilda Cemetery, a memorial to him was restored and dedicated during the Metropolitan Fire Brigades Centenary Year (1991). With some research and photocopy his obituary in the Prahran Telegraph, Wed Feb 11 1891.
