Portrait watermarks, framed and illuminated, of Queen Elizabeth (560mm x 440mm) and Abraham Lincon (575mm x 440mm) produced by Portals the Paper Makers of Overton, England, suppliers of bank note paper to the Bank of England. (2)
Portals was founded in 1712 by Henry Portal at Bere Mill in Whitchurch, Hampshire. Twelve years later in 1724 he gained the contract to supply the Bank of England with bank note paper and in 1975 celebrated 250 years of continueous supply. It became the worlds largest manufacturer of cylinder mould made security paper for banknotes and other valuable documents.
