Lot 862

Sale 67 · Important Australian & World Coins, Medals & Banknotes

Description

Yorkshire, Hull, I.K. Picards Hull Lead Works penny, 1812, legend both sides, error with name spelt J. R. Prichard (Davis 91, Withers 795a) and halfpenny 1812 (Davis 95). The first damaged as always, otherwise only fine, but very rare and only a few known, second token good extremely fine. (2)

Ex W.J. Noble Collection, Noble Numismatics Sale 58 (lot 1944), the first from Seaby in 1969 with priced ticket, second ex W.G. Wright Collection. The issue of Davis 91 must have been diliberately defaced after the error was discovered and presumably a handful were saved from the melting pot. Another view is that they are deliberate contemporary counterfeits made to defraud Picards issues (Withers p.123).
