MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis, Commodus (A.D. 177-192), AE 24, (8.64 grams), obv. bare headed bust of Commodus to right, around AY KAI.**L.AURH KOMOD*OC, rev. the Three Graces or (Charites) facing, around, MAPKI**ANOPOLLEITWN*, dotted border, (cf.S.1925, cf.BMC 56, Pick Vol.I No.540, [p.197, 6 noted], JIAN XI, 485 [p.182]). Attractive brown patina, good very fine/nearly very fine and rare.

A most interesting reverse type. The 'Charites' in statuary form are represented in various museums throughout the world. This a finer example coming from the same dies as the example sold in our sale 60 [lot 1791].
