REPUBLIC, Anonymous, (275-270 B.C.), AE double litra, uncertain South Italian mint, (9.57 g), obv. female head (or possibly Apollo) to right, bound with ribbon, rev. lion walking right, ROMAN[O] in exergue, (S.590, Cr.16/1a, BMC 23, Syd.5). Attractive light green patina, nearly very fine - very fine and rare.

Ex RJM collection purchased from Nummorum Auctiones (Italo Vecchi) Auction Sale No.12, June 5, 1998 (lot 568).

This rare double litra comes from the first series of struck copper coinage designed to facilitate commerece with the Greek cities of the south.
