GROUP OF SIX: Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 2 reverse with clear ghost dates), - two clasps - Cape Colony, Orange Free State; King's South Africa Medal 1902, - two clasps - South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902; 1914-15 Star with rosette; British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19; St John Ambulance Brigade Jubilee of Queen Victoria Medal 1897 in bronze. 13300 Pte H.Gammon, R.A.M.C. on first medal, 1262 Pte H.Gammon. Aust:A.M.C. on second medal, 9117 Pte. H.Gammon. 2.A.S.C A.I.F. on third - fifth medals, No 333 Dvr. H.Gammon M.Co. R.V.M.S.C. on last medal. First five medals impressed, last medal engraved. M.Co. R.V.M.S.C. (Maidstone Company, Royal Volunteer Medical Staff Corps. During the celebrations of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 the Maidstone Company was detailed to line the streets in London from Westminster Bridge to Whitehall Place and the Horse Guards. The Officer Commanding the unit received the St John Ambulance Brigade Jubilee of Queen Victoria Medal along with 28 of his soldiers who held St John's Ambulance certificates. One of these was Driver H.Gammon. A further 58 men of the unit present at the parade did not recive the medal. Driver H.Gammon was also awarded the Maidstone Typhoid Epidemic Medal, a medal issued in 1897 by the Maidstone Corporation to recognise the brave and devoted service of those who volunteered to treat the ill during the outbreak of typhoid during the autumn of 1897. A total of 41 medals were issued to the Maidstone Company of Volunteers and an unknown number were issued to other volunteers including Nurse Edith Cavell. Harry Gammon, clerk aged 23 born at All Saints near Maidstone, Kent, England; Boer War: Enl.15Feb1900 RAMC then serving in Volunteer Medical Staff Corps; served in South Africa 24Feb1900 to 15Aug1901; Disch.20Aug1901; WWI AIF: now commercial traveller, age 39; Enl.09Nov1915 at Melbourne to Army Dental Corps; to 2nd AASC 30Jan1916 Serapeum; to France 25Mar1916; injured in accident 28Jun1916, fracture of both bones of left leg with backward displacement; Disch.08Jan1917 in London as Medically Unfit. With research.
