AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), silver denarius, Uncertain Spanish mint (Colonia Caesar Augusta), issued c.18 B.C. (3.80 grams), obv. Toga picta over tunica palmata between Aquila (Legionary eagle) and wreath to right, above S.P.Q.R. PAR[E], below CONS. SVO, rev. slow quadriga to right, panels ornamented, surmounted by four minature galloping horses, in exergue CAESARI AVGV[STO], (cf.S.482, RIC 96, C.80, BMC 401). Banker's punch mark in obverse field, grey tone, otherwise very fine or better, rare.

Ex. Spink Australia, privately February 1977, with its ticket. The ornaments of toga picta and tunica palmata (consular robes) were the emblems of the chief power of the state.
