REPUBLIC, Pompey the Great, (assassinated 48 B.C.), silver plated denarius, mint in Spain struck by his son Cnaeus Pompey after his death, issued 46-5 B.C., (2.6 grams), obv. Roma helmeted head to right, around M POBLICI LEG PRO PR, rev. Hispania presenting palm to Pompey alighting from prow, below CN MAGNVS [IMP], (S.337, Cr.469/1a-d, Syd. 1035). Traces of silver surfaced etched away, otherwise very fine and very scarce.

This issue was struck by Cnaeus Pompey, son of Pompey the Great, who went to Spain after his father's death to revive the spirit of the party. It may be the son and not the father on the coin.
