ROMAN REPUBLIC, anonymous issue, cast AE Aes Grave sextans, (240-225 B.C.), (41.50 grams), obv. head of Mercury to left, wearing petasos, two pellets below, rev. prow of galley to right, two dots below, (S.48, Cr.36/5, Thurlow-Vecchi 'Italian Cast Coinage' No.55 p.37, Pl.35). Dark green patination, cast flaws in field, similar to the illustrated Thurlow-Vecchi example, irregular edge, very fine and rare.

Ex. Sir Marcus Clark Collection, Lawsons 6-7th July 1954 (lot 85b [40/-], and sold to Dave Raymond with his ticket (written up with the previous lot), and sold by Spink Australia privately December 19, 1981.
