BRITISH GUIANA, Trade & Navigation/ Pure Copper Preferable to Paper, one stiver, 1838, edge plain, another edge engrailed but without any graining (Lyall 111, Pr 60, the edge variety not listed). Nearly very fine; good very fine (2).
Acquired in the 1960's. This issue is thought to have been made by Mr Balgarnie, a liquor and dry goods merchant. It is modelled in anymous copper tokens that proved popular in Canada. The issue was large and over a period during the 1840's Messrs Baldwin of London have a large parcel of this token some with original colour suggesting that this issue may have been remaindered after a fire destroyed the premises of Messrs Balgarnie in Water St, Georgetown in 1872.
Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price. All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
