CRICKETING CHALLENGE CUP, a presentation cup (271 mm high) in sterling silver engraved on a shield 'Presented to C.H. Brooks Vice President', and on another shield opposite 'Adelaide & Suburban Cricketing Association Challenge Cup Season 1879-1880 Won By The East Adelaide', surmounted by a cricketer with bat attached to a lid with extensive and ornate engravings as scrolls, plants etc. both on the lid and on the body of the cup, stamped and hallmarked on lid and near rim of cup, H. Steiner (of Adelaide) together with crown, Queen Victoria's head and lion. Heavily toned, otherwise as originally made, with gilt interior.

J. Henry Steiner (1835-1914) a jeweller of Adelaide was born in Rodenberg, near Hanover Germany and arrived in Adelaide on the 'Ohio' in 1858. He commenced business in Rundle Street where he remained until 1884. Between these years he was one of the most prolific of Adelaide's jewellers and silversmiths and consequently received the patronage of several governors. He exhibited jewellery at the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition in 1866-7, the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878 and the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879.
