ANTONINIUS PIUS, (A.D. 138-161), AE as, Rome mint, issued 154-155, (10.642 grams), obv. ANTONINVS A[VG PI] VS P P TR P XVIII, laureate head to right, rev. BRITANNIA COS IIII, [SC] in exergue, Britannia seated to left on rock, to left round shield and eagle-tipped sceptre, (S.1288, RIC 934, C.117). Rough surface, nearly very fine, rare.

Ex. Spink & Son, London. These rare issues that portray Britannia and have this reverse legend are most important to the very small series of Roman coins that allude to Britain. As a type they tend to be only found in England and clearly were struck for use in that province.
