SOLD $200

PHOENICIA, Aradus, (202-133 B.C.), silver drachm, (3.830 grams), issued 169-8 B.C., obv. bee with open wings dividing A RE, all within dotted border, rev. stag standing to right, palm tree behind, before **[AR]ADI[WN]*, (cf.S.5989, BMC 152-154). Slightly off centred on the reverse, damaged on the obverse, attractive dark grey patination, otherwise very fine and scarce.

The derivation of this coin type from Ephesus is obvious and it was probably due to some purely commercial reason. The series is dated and each group of letters on the obverse corresponds to a specific date (p.xxx-xxxi BMC).

Estimate / sale price does not include buyer's premium (currently 22% including GST) which is added to hammer price. All bids are executed on the understanding that the Terms & Conditions of sale have been read and accepted. For information on grading and estimates please refer to the Buying at Auction advice.
