THAILAND, The King Rama V's portrait medal, AE 50; issued 1871, (88.8 grams), obv. king Rama V to left, wearing various medals, rev. inscription reading 'Birthday Celebration, Year of the Goat, Chula sakarat 1233, Third year of the Present Reign'. Rough surface, filed edge for rounding, extremely fine and rare.

This medal was issued to commemorate King Rama V's 18th birthday and is the first Thai medal to bear a portrait. A similar example in Spink-Taisai Sale 11 (Sept. 5, 1991. lot 531) realised US$4950.
