LUCANIA, Metapontum under Hannibal, (214-207 B.C.), silver half shekel or drachm, (3.864 grams), obv. head of Athena to right, wearing wire necklace and Corinthian crested helmet, rev. META to left, barley ear with leaf to right, owl flying right above, (S.423, SNG ANS 550, SNG Lloyd 404, E.S.G. Robinson, 'Carthaginian and other South Italian coinages in the Second Punic War', NC 1964, p.50, no.3, [Pl.VI, 6]). Extremely fine.

Ex Ponterio & Associates, Mail bid sale 102, July 29, 1999 (lot 83). The mint of Metapontum ceased production after the pyrrhic War but reopened during the Second Punic War, when the city coined to support the Carthaginian war effort. Several variations of this issue was produced including an indentical issue in the name of the Lucanians.
