SPAIN, The Barcids of Spain, Carthago Nova, under Scipio (later Africanus), (c.210 B.C.), AE 23, (9.382 grams), obv. male head to left, rev. horse standing right, palm tree behind, (Robinson, [Essays Mattingly], No.7 (p) [p.52, Plate III], Villaronga 282 [Pl.XI], CNH 69 [p.72]). Earthy dark patina, otherwise very fine and rare.

Ex Italo Vecchi Auction September 4, 1998, Sale 13 (lot 76). The male head has been thought to be that of Scipio the great Roman general who later faced Hannibal at the battle of Zama in 202 B.C. in which he defeated the Carthaginians.
