CILICIA, Satrap of Cilicia, Mazaios, (361-334 B.C.) silver stater, (9.7 grams), Myriandros mint (Newell and Levante), obv. Baal of Tarsus enthroned to left resting on sceptre before him, thymiaterion before him, behind Aramaic legend 'Baal tarz', below throne 'ankh' symbol, rev. lion walking to left, linear border, exergue line, above Aramaic legend 'Mazdai' all within linear circle, (cf.S.5652, cf.BMC 64, SNG Paris 431, Luynes 2869, cf.SNG Levante 188). Porous field, good very fine, very rare.

Ex Noble Numismatics Sale 56 (lot 1886). Mazaios ruled Cilicia for 27 years, until just before the Macedonian conquest. Later, under Alexander, he became governor of Babylonia.
