SICILY, Syracuse, Hieron II, (274-216 B.C.), AE 28, (19.38 grams), obv. diademed head of Hieron II beardless to left, dotted border, rev. horseman to right holding spear, **[I]EPWNO[S]* in exergue, N Y below horse, (cf.S.1221, BMC -, SNG Cop. -, SNG ANS -, Calciati 195 [p.382]). Black patina, very fine or better, very rare variety.

No examples known in the major published collection, Calciati notes three examples with these letters in the field in private collections but they are not as fine as this example.
