NETHERLAND EAST INDIES, The V.O.C. rectangular silver bar 146 x 40 x 33mm, of weight 1720 grams, countermarked with the VOC monogram 'Z' (Zeeland) above and 'M' (Middleburg) below with assay mark of G.V.D. overdouble head eagle set with a shield. Some corrosion on two side but not affecting the marks, the countermarks very fine and as a bar extremely rare.

Ex 'Bredenhof' a Dutch East Indiaman ship which sank off the Mozambique coast on the 6th June 1753 on the outward bound journey to Batavia. This silver from Zeeland was refined to the same fineness as the Indian Moghul rupee used in the extensive trade in that part of the world at that time. An important piece of treasure trove and extremely rare for an ingot with a known provenence.
