IONIA, Ephesus, Gordian III, (A.D. 238-244), AE 17, (5.525 grams), obv. bust right of Gordian laureate draped and cuirassed, around AVT K M ANT **GORDIANO*C, rev. tetrastyle temple within which is the statue of the Ephesian Artemis, around **EF* EC I**WN*, (S.-, BMC -, SNG Cop. 482, SNG Munich and SNG Von Aulock -). Fine and rare.
The concept of lesser number of columns for the representation of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was an artistic approach used for smaller diameter coins.
