TIBERIUS, (A.D. 14-37), AE sestertius, Rome mint, issued A.D. 22-23, (21.02 grams), obv. Tiberius seated to left on curule chair holding patera and sceptre, around CIVITATIBVS [ASIAE RESTI]TVTI[S], rev. TI CAE[SAR DIVI AVG F AV]GVST P M TR POT XXIIII around large SC, (S.1764 [£200 F], RIC 48, C.3, CBN 52, BMC 70). Weak for much of the legend, otherwise nearly fine and rare.

A most interesting type that publicises the measures undertaken by Tiberius for the relief of those cities of the province Asia which had been affected by a devastating earthquake in AD 17 centred near the city of Sardis. The type was restored by Titus.
