ANDRONICUS I COMNENUS, (1183-1185), electrum aspron trachy, 30mm, (4.50 g), Constantinople mint, struck 1183-1185, obv. The Virgin orans, standing facing on dais, nimbate and wearing pallium and maphorium, on her breast nimbate head of the infant Christ facing on either side of the Virgin's nimbus, +*Q*KE ROH**Q*EI, above MP monogram to left and **Q*V to right, rev. Andronicus standing facing on left, Christ standing facing crowning the emperor around **ANDRONIKW* to left, **[DE*CPOTH], IC XC either side of Christ, (S.1984 [550 pounds], DOC 2b, H, Pl.18, 11-12, BMC 3-4; BN 1-4, Ratto 2167). Flan crack, otherwise about extremely fine, very rare.
Ex Jean Elsen Sale 133, 13 September 2014 (lot 382 for 330 euros) previously from Baldwin's London September 1988 for 185 pounds.
