CARACALLA, (A.D. 198-217), AE sestertius, issued 213, Rome mint, 31mm, (21.49 g), obv. laureate bust to right of Caracalla, around M AVREL ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, rev. Providentia standing left holding baton in right hand, sceptre in left, globe at her feet to left, around PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM, S C across field, (S.6948, RIC 511a, C.532). Attractive green patina, minor edge splits from striking, otherwise good very fine and very scarce.

A coin type used by several emperors to show a belief of the gods involvement in human affairs. The name Providentia is derived from providere (to foresee). In this context it signifies as the they (the Romans and the emperor) rely on the Providence of the gods with the globe signifying that the orb of earth whose government is entrusted to the emperor by the providence of the gods.
