COMMODUS, (A.D. 177-192), AE sestertius, (27.40 g), the . British victory issue, Rome mint, struck 185 A.D., obv. laureate head right, M COMMODVS AN TON AVG PIVS BRIT, rev. around P M TR P XIMP VII COS IIII P P, with VICT BR[IT] in exergue, S C across, Victory seated right on pile of arms, inscribing shield set on knee with long stylus, (S.5826, RIC III 452; BMC 560, MIR 18, 665-6/30 var. (VIC BRIT); Banti 485 (same obv. die as 486 illustration). Nearly extremely fine, with a dark green-black patina, very rare.

During the reign of Commodus, a serious revolt erupted in Britain in AD 184 across its Northern frontier, the causes of which are uncertain. The revolt was quickly put down by Commodus Governor Ulpius Marcellus in Scotland, A series of coins was struck to commemorate the event.
