AUGUSTUS, (27 B.C. - A.D. 14), AE as, posthumous issue, Rome mint, issued under Tiberius, issued A.D. 22-30, (10.50 g), obv. radiate head of Augustus to left, around DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, rev. PROVIDENT in exergue, S C across field, altar enclosure with double panelled door, (S.1789, RIC 81, BMC 146).C.628, BMC 740). Light brown patination, very fine, very scarce.
Ex Hans Ferdinand Collection, previously from Laurie Nugent, South Australia.
The site of the altar is not known, It was dedicated to the 'providence' of Augustus and is suggested to be located in the Campus Martius.
