THESSALY, Thessalian League, (mid late 1st century B.C.), silver stater or double victoriatus, (5.68 g), Gorgias and Themistogenes, magistrates, Larissa mint, obv. head of Zeus to right, crowned with oak leaves, rev. Athena Itonia advancing to right, brandishing spear and holding shield, on sides **QESSA LWN*, above across **GOR-GIOU*, either side of figure **QE-MI/ST-O*, (cf.S.2232, BCD 882.1var. [variety Gorgias name in nominative], HGC 4, 210). Toned, portrait extremely fine/good very fine, some roughness on the reverse, a very rare variant.

Ex CNG eSale 375, June 1, 2016 (lot 317) and from the BCD Collection, acquired from Malcolm Hay in October 1981, includes tickets and photographs.
