DFC GROUP OF FIVE: Distinguished Flying Cross (GVI type 1); 1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45. The first with 1946 on lower arm, the second and third medals unnamed, 411771 L B Giffin on last two medals. The first medal engraved, last two medals impressed. Swing mounted, ribbons with some damage, the second last medal with some contact marks, otherwise very fine - good very fine.

Together with RAAF embroidered pilot's wings (KC); RAAF Flying Log Book July 1941 - August 1945; Member's Pay Book (2); Appointment document as an officer in Citizen Air Force from 12 January 1942, document dated 16 October 1943; Citation for DFC from Governor-General's office; RAAF Officer's Certificate of Service.

DFC: LG 25/6/1946, p3217; CAG 27/6/1946, p1724 - to 411771 Flt Lt Lyell Balfour Giffin, 82Sqn, RAAF - Presented by The Governor-General at Admiralty House, Sydney on 25 January 1949.

Citation: Flight Lieutenant Giffin has flown with a Kittyhawk Squadron from August, 1942, to October, 1943, operating from Milne Bay and since June, 1945, assumed command of "B" Flight, No.82 Squadron. During his first tour he had many engagements with the enemy and carried out attacks on enemy positions, stores and barges. He has personally destroyed an enemy aircraft on the ground, and has taken part in much damage to enemy equipment. While with 82 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Giffin has shown fearlessness and skill and has never returned from a mission without successfully completing his task.

Lyell Balfour Giffin, born 30Jan1920 at Molong, NSW; Enl.25May1941 at Sydney, NSW; pilot training 25Jul1941-25Jun1942; Appt Pilot Officer 12Jan1942; various ops at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Goodenough Island, Labuan as well as other postings within Australia; Record of Operational Tour with 82Sqn in SWPA commenced 14Jun1945, Finished 27Aug1945; Disch.02Oct1945 as Flt Lt, 82Sqn, Labuan, at own request on compassionate grounds; Lyell Balfour Giffin died 17Sep1979.
