DSM GROUP OF SEVEN: Distinguished Service Medal (GVIR Indiae.Imp); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45; Australia Service Medal 1939-45; Philippines Liberation Medal. E.R.A.2. A.Mayger. R.A.N. 21309 on first medal, second to fourth medals unnamed, 21309. A.H.Mayger. on fifth and sixth medals, seventh medal unnamed as issued. The first medal officially engraved, the other named medals impressed. Display mounted on a cardboard covered foam panel with items listed below included as well as particulars of the recipient and his award, very fine - uncirculated.

Together with Daily Dispatch Birthday Club medal, Founded in the Royal Jubilee Year 1935, in white metal (32.5mm), with suspension loop; Sydney Technical College prize medal, in bronze (70mm), reverse inscribed, 'Thomas Iron/ Memorial Medal/Awarded to/Archibald Mayger./Boilermaking/Stage III/1932'; RSL Club badge (three figure type) with 60 overlay on crown.

Citation: His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Distinguished Service Medal to Engine Room Artificer Second Class Archibald Hilton Mayger, Royal Australian Navy, for skill, determination and courage while serving in Leyte Gulf operations.

In a letter from H.R.H. the Governor General of Australia, ERA II A.Mayger DSM, RAN was advised that the medal would be presented by the Governor of New South Wales, His Excellency Lieutenant General John Northcott C.B., M.V.O., on behalf of His Excellency the Acting Governor-General at Government House, Sydney on 27 February 1947.

During ERAII A.Mayger's time of service on the Arunta, she sank the Japanese Kaichu type submarine RO-33 off Port Moresby on 24Aug1942; participated in extraction of Allied guerrillas from Timor in Jan1943; participated in Operation Chronicle landings in Jul1943; in late Nov1943 fired on Japanese ammunition dumps in New Guinea before supporting troop landings at Arawe, Cape Gloucester and Saidor during Dec1943 and Jan1944; on 13Oct1944 formed part of the Allied fleet bound for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and was part of the Allied ambush of a Japanese fleet on 25Oct1944, the Battle of Surigao Strait; it was during the Leyte Gulf operations that ERAII A.Mayger was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

Archibald Hilton Mayger, boilermaker, born 12May1914 at Broken Hill, NSW; Enl.16Nov1936 for 12 years term with RAN at rank of ERA IV; to ERA 3 16Nov1939; to ERA II 17Nov1943; Ship Service included Australia 08Mar1937-25Apr1938, Voyager 26Apr1938-04Nov1940, Arunta 30Mar1942-25Feb1944, Arunta 10Jun1944-22Dec1944, other postings were depot or shore establishments; Disch.05May1945 as physically unfit for naval service. Later he worked as an Inspector for Department of Labour & Industry & Social Welfare (appointed 30Jun1950, CAG No.105, p2055); Died Nov1959; Burial service at Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium 24Nov1959.
