SCOTLAND, PATNA Cattle Show, 1859, in silver (57mm), hallmarked on both sides for Glasgow 1852 by maker 'PA' (Peter Aitken I), reverse inscribed, 'For The/Three Best Cows/Given By/The Workmen On The Burnfoot Farm/Won BY' (unnamed). Tiny edge nicks and hairlines, otherwise good very fine.

Patna was so named by William Fullarton whose father, John Fullarton served as a Major-General in the British Army posted to Bihar in India. William was born at Patna in Bihar, India in 1774 and so when he returned to Scotland in 1802 he founded a village for people who worked on his estate and coalfields at East Ayrshire and named it Patna.
