ITALY, Leonella de'Este (1407-1450), Marquis of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, twentieth century replica of the medal in bronze (98mm, 370g) by Pisanello, to commemorate the marriage in 1444 of the Marquis, obverse, bust of Leonella left, inscription LEONELLVS MARCHIO ESTENSIS D FERRARIE REGII ET MVTINE, GE R AR above, reverse, a lion left, being taught to sing by cupid at right, an eagle in a leafless tree above the lion, MCCCCXLIIII on pillar, OPVS PISANI PICTORIS (see Forrer, Vol IV, p568, illustrated p570), edge stamped '106'. Extremely fine.
