PAIR: British War Medal 1914-18; Victory Medal 1914-19. 2/lieut. D.G.MacDougall. A.I.F. Impressed. Second medal lacquered, otherwise fine - very fine.
Darcy Graeme MacDougall, dental mechanic, age 20, born at Charleville, Qld; Enl.28Jul1915 at Melbourne, Vic and re-attested at Langwarrin,Vic 01Mar1916; Emb.14Mar1916; WIA 02Nov1916, France; Cpl 01May1917, commissioned 2/Lt 02Feb1918; Disch.02Dec1918 Medically Unfit; Died 04Jan1951. In a letter published in the Mercury at Hobart on 6 January 1917 titled 'An Anzac in France', at that time Private MacDougall wrote, 'If I told you the numbers of rats that shift their quarters when a bombardment is on, you'd scarcely believe me. And mind you, they are rats, not glorified mice, but whoppers nearly as big as the rabbits at Beaumaris. I said nothing the other night when I woke and found a big rat cuddling into me. Ugh! But next evening they had a tango ball in the burrow and the following night it was the limit - they ate my cake of soap.'
